OVERVIEW

A vaginal yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is a common condition. It is usually caused by a type of yeast called Candida albicans. This yeast is found in small numbers in the vagina, as well as in the mouth and digestive tract.

The most common symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are itching, burning, and soreness in the vagina and vulva. Other symptoms may include pain during intercourse, pain when urinating, and thick, white, or curd-like vaginal discharge.

Most vaginal yeast infections can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams or suppositories. However, some women may need to take prescription-strength medications.

SYMPTOMS

The signs and symptoms of vaginal yeast infection may include the following:

  • Itching and irritation in the vagina and vulva.
  • A burning sensation, especially during intercourse or while urinating.
  • Redness and swelling of the vulva.
  • Vaginal pain and soreness.
  • Vaginal rash.
  • Thick, white, odor-free vaginal discharge with a cottage cheese appearance.
  • Watery vaginal discharge.

CAUSES

The fungus candida albicans is responsible for most vaginal yeast infections.

Your vagina naturally contains a balanced mix of yeast, including candida, and bacteria. Certain bacteria (lactobacillus) act to prevent an overgrowth of yeast.

But that balance can be disrupted. An overgrowth of candida or penetration of the fungus into deeper vaginal cell layers causes the signs and symptoms of a yeast infection.
