OVERVIEW
A vaginal yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is a common condition. It is usually caused by a type of yeast called Candida albicans. This yeast is found in small numbers in the vagina, as well as in the mouth and digestive tract.
The most common symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are itching, burning, and soreness in the vagina and vulva. Other symptoms may include pain during intercourse, pain when urinating, and thick, white, or curd-like vaginal discharge.
Most vaginal yeast infections can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams or suppositories. However, some women may need to take prescription-strength medications.
