OVERVIEW

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. The infection is usually spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It can also be spread through contact with contaminated objects, such as sex toys.

The symptoms of trichomoniasis can vary from mild to severe. In most cases, the infection causes vaginitis, which is characterized by itching, redness, and a fishy odor. Other symptoms include pain during urination, discomfort during sex, and light bleeding.

If left untreated, trichomoniasis can lead to serious health complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and an increased risk of HIV infection. Therefore, it is important to get tested and treated as soon as possible if you think you have the infection.

Symptoms in Men

• Frothy or pus-containing discharge.
• Burning and frequent urination, especially in the early morning.
• Urethral irritation.
• Moisture at the penile tip and under the foreskin.

Symptoms in Women

• Yellow-green, frothy vaginal discharge.
• Fishy vaginal odor.
• Vulvar irritation, Redness and soreness.
• Pain during sexual intercourse.
• Burning sensation when urinating.
