OVERVIEW

Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, the tube that drains urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. It can be caused by infection with bacteria, viruses, or other organisms. Urethritis is usually accompanied by pain or burning during urination, as well as increased frequency or urgency of urination. The symptoms of urethritis can vary depending on the cause.

Urethritis is a common condition, particularly in men. It is estimated that 10-20% of men in the United States will experience urethritis at some point in their lives. The condition is less common in women, but can occur if the urethra is stretched or damaged by childbirth, sexual intercourse, or certain medical procedures.

Urethritis is generally treated with medications, such as antibiotics or antivirals.
