Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is transmitted through sexual contact. The disease can affect the genitals, mucous membranes, and skin. Syphilis is divided into four stages: primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary. Each stage has different symptoms.
The primary stage is characterized by a sore at the site of infection. The secondary stage is characterized by a rash on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. The latent stage is characterized by a lack of symptoms. The tertiary stage is characterized by damage to the brain, heart, and other organs.
Syphilis is treated with antibiotics. If the disease is not treated, it can lead to death.
Once syphilis shows symptoms, its severity typically progresses in three stages: primary, secondary and tertiary. Syphilis and herpes have similar symptoms, however, the main indicator between herpes and syphilis depends on if you’re experiencing pain. When symptoms are painless but present, that is a sign of syphilis whereas herpes blisters are painful.
While symptoms are present but painless, this is a sign of syphilis whereas if sores/blisters are painful, this is a sign of herpes.
NOTE: Lab testing is NOT required prior to treatment if you have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms.
My Doctor Online offers both at-home test kits and in-person lab testing. After treatment we recommend a test of cure 2-3 weeks after completing treatment to confirm clearing the infection.

Note: We recommend repeating the Syphilis test 3-6 months after treatment to ensure that your infection has resolved. Treatment failure occurs if syphilis titer level does not decline 6 months after treatment.
