OVERVIEW

A sinus infection, also called sinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses. The sinuses are hollow air spaces in the bones around the nose. They are located in the cheeks, forehead, and behind the bridge of the nose. Sinusitis is a common condition that affects millions of people each year.

The most common symptoms of sinusitis are a runny nose, nasal congestion, and facial pain. Other symptoms include a fever, bad breath, and a cough. Most sinus infections are caused by a viral infection, such as the common cold. However, they can also be caused by a bacterial infection or an allergy.

Sinusitis can be a short-term or long-term condition. Short-term sinusitis is usually caused by a viral infection and goes away on its own. Long-term sinusitis, also called chronic sinusitis, is usually caused by a bacterial infection or an allergy. It can last for weeks, months, or even years.

SYMPTOMS

The signs and symptoms of sinusitis may include the following:

  • Thick, yellow or greenish mucus from the nose (runny nose) or down the back of the throat (postnasal drainage).
  • Blocked or stuffy nose (congestion) causing difficulty breathing through your nose.
  • Pain, tenderness, swelling and pressure around your eyes, cheeks, nose or forehead that worsens when bending over.
  • Headache.

CAUSES

Sinusitis is most often caused by the common cold, which is an infection with a virus. In some cases, an infection with bacteria develops.
