OVERVIEW

Mycoplasma are a type of bacteria that are very small in size and do not have a cell wall. This makes them unique from other types of bacteria, as they are able to survive without oxygen.

Mycoplasma are found in a number of different environments, including the respiratory tract, genital tract, and skin. They are also the cause of some types of pneumonia.

Infection with Mycoplasma can often be asymptomatic, meaning that an individual may not experience any symptoms. However, in some cases, Mycoplasma can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, coughing, and difficulty breathing.

Additional Information

  • If left untreated, in men, mycoplasma genitalium can lead to urethritis (inflammation of the urethra) or epididymo-orchitis (inflammation of the epididymis and testicle).
  • In women, it can cause cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix) or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID is also associated with infertility in women.
  • Failing to treat a mycoplasma genitalium infection significantly increases the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, including HIV..
