OVERVIEW

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause symptoms in both men and women. It is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which can grow and multiply easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body), cervix (the opening to the uterus or womb), and rectum.

In women, the bacteria can also Spread to the Fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus, causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can lead to long-term pelvic pain, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus). In men, the infection can cause inflammation of the urethra (urethritis) and, less commonly, inflammation of the testicles (epididymitis).

Gonorrhea is a very common STI and is most often Spread through unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex. It can also be Spread from mother to baby during childbirth.
