OVERVIEW

Genital warts are growths that appear on the genitals. They’re caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Genital warts can be itchy, painful, and embarrassing. They can also make it difficult to urinate and have sex.

If left untreated, genital warts can grow and spread. In some cases, they can lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, or penis.

The good news is that genital warts can be treated. If you have HPV, you can get rid of the virus with medication. But there is no cure for HPV. The best way to prevent HPV is to get the HPV vaccine.

Additional Information

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HPV is one of the most common diseases transferred through skin-to-skin contact. Anyone who tests positive for the virus is at risk of developing genital warts, among other complications as well as developing a higher risk of getting and transferring HIV. Although the HPV vaccination can help prevent an HPV infection and its consequences, anyone who is sexually active with multiple partners may still be at risk of contracting the disease.

In many cases, HPV does not produce any symptoms for weeks to years after first being transferred. This delay in developing symptoms may mean the virus is transmitted between several partners before the symptoms appear.

Symptoms

  • Small, flesh-colored, brown or pink swellings in your genital area.
  • A cauliflower-like shape caused by several warts close together.
  • Itching or discomfort in your genital area.
  • Bleeding with intercourse.

Lab Testing

NOTE: Lab testing is NOT required prior to treatment if you have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms.

My Doctor Online offers both at-home test kits and in-person lab testing. After treatment we recommend a test of cure 2-3 weeks after completing treatment to confirm clearing the infection.
