OVERVIEW

Eczema is a general term for several different types of skin inflammation (dermatitis). Eczema is characterized by itchy, inflamed skin. It can be a chronic condition, which means it can last for a long time and come and go. Itchy skin is the most common symptom of eczema.

There are different types of eczema, and they can be classified based on their cause, or triggers. The most common type of eczema is atopic dermatitis, which is often caused by an allergic reaction. Other types of eczema include contact dermatitis, which is caused by exposure to irritants, and seborrheic dermatitis, which is caused by overproduction of oil.

Eczema can be a difficult condition to manage, but there are treatments available that can help to control the symptoms.

SYMPTOMS

The signs and symptoms of eczema may include the following:

  • Thickened skin.
  • Dry, cracked skin.
  • Oozing and crusting.
  • Itchiness (pruritus).
  • Small, raised bumps, on brown or Black skin.

CAUSES

Atopic dermatitis is related to a gene variation that affects the skin’s ability to provide protection. With a weak barrier function, the skin is less able to retain moisture and protect against bacteria, irritants, allergens and environmental factors such as tobacco smoke.

In other people, atopic dermatitis is caused by too much of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus on the skin.

TREATMENT

Available treatments we offer, include but are not limited to:

  • Topical (steroids or vitamin D analog creams).
  • In severe cases oral steroids.
  • If appropriate Otezla (must have insurance, and meet specific requirements).
