OVERVIEW

Allergies are a reaction of the immune system to substances that are usually harmless. The substances are called allergens, and they can be inhaled, ingested, or touched. When the body comes in contact with an allergen, it produces antibodies to fight it off. In people with allergies, the immune system overreacts to the allergens, and the result is symptoms such as wheezing, itching, or swelling.

There are many different types of allergies, and they can be classified according to the substances that cause them. For example, there are food allergies, drug allergies, and environmental allergies. Allergies can also be classified according to the severity of the reaction. Some people have mild reactions, while others have severe reactions that can be life-threatening.

SYMPTOMS

The signs and symptoms of allergies may include the following:

  • Sneezing
  • Itching of the nose, eyes or roof of the mouth
  • Runny, stuffy nose
  • Watery, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Itching or hives all over the body
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, face or throat
  • Urticaria

CAUSES

An allergy starts when your immune system mistakes a normally harmless substance for a dangerous invader. The immune system then produces antibodies that remain on the alert for that particular allergen. When you’re exposed to the allergen again, these antibodies can release a number of immune system chemicals, such as histamine, that cause allergy symptoms.
